So, you have all your controls and info windows (see other posts in this section) set up, and you're ready to give this a go.

Trying to start up and take off can be a bit of a nightmare if you don't know what to do, or which engine settings to use. Thankfully there is help.

The first thing I would refer you to is the manuals in the game. In there is a bit of info about each aircraft, and some diagrams that will help you learn the layout and position of important controls and instruments. The other good bit of information in there is a table which shows the different engine settings for each aircraft.

You'll find the aircraft manuals inside your game installation. The screenshot below shows their location in a typical installation. As with all images in our forums, click it to make it full screen.

INTRODUCTION

IL-2 Cliffs of Dover and Desert Wings:Tobruk uses a system called "Info Windows" to display information on your screen. This is overlaid on the game screen, meaning it's visible most of the time. As the information ages, it fades out of view after a set time, hence some windows in the screenshot below not displaying any information.

Info Windows display things on your screen such as:

• Engine settings (Engine RPM, Throttle, Radiatior settings)

• Radio Transmissions (Info from ground controllers)

Cliffs of Dover Blitz/Desert Wings:Tobruk has a neat little little feature that allows you to choose the weapons loadout of the aircraft you are flying. It's more than any other flight sim, as it actually allows you to choose each individual round in every gun's belt.

You can customise literally every gun on every aircraft. It's not just the fighters, but also the bomber's guns. You can literally tune them up with the most effective loadout.

To access the loadout options, select your aircraft and then choose LOADOUT.

Select the GUNS tab, and click on the first round on the MAIN BELT and delete them all. Replace the rounds as shown in the screenshots below by clicking on the relevent round in the BULLETS column, then click add. When you have finished one gun, click NEXT GUN to move onto the next gun.

Before we get started, it's worth noting that there are sometimes problems in setting up certain combinations of flight sticks throttles and pedals.
